On March 21, Stephen Lecce, MPP for King—Vaughan and Ontario's Minister of Energy and Mines, alongside Parliamentary Assistant David Smith and Whitby MPP Lorne Coe, hosted German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherine Reiche at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station's Small Modular Rector construction site. Amidst global energy shocks caused by Russia and ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Canada is promoting nuclear energy as a stable, clean, and affordable export. Minister Lecce profiled Ontario's leadership building the G7's first Small Modular Reactors, creating 18,000 jobs and adding nearly $40 billion to Canada's economy.
"Ontario is leading the G7 building the first Small Modular Reactor, part of a broader strategy to export our ingenuity to reduce reliance on autocratic regimes like Russia, while bolstering Ontario's supply chain," said Minister Lecce. "At Darlington, we hosted Germany's Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy to showcase from refurbishments to building the first SMR in the Western World, Ontario is proving what it means to deliver ethical resources and reliable energy to our allies in Europe and beyond."
